for those who missed today's music lesson

Sound used in films + videos
Functions of sounds
-create atmosphere
-add realism
-continue the story
-introduce characters

Creating atmosphere
-kungfu fighting
-ghost
-moment of parting
-funny action
-stalkiing
-romance

Introduce characters
-some films have themes that are associated with specific characters
-gives audience a sense of anticipations of who is about to appear onscreen

Background music
-creates atmosphere
-introduce characters
-generally instrumental though there is also sung background music

Sound design
-creating a world of sound for a film
-Ben Burtt creates sounds for film

Foley effects
-footsteps (different shoes produce different sounds)
-rustling of clothes
-car crashes
-door slamming

Project
-choose a clip with length between 1.5 - 4.0min, prefably 2.0 - 3.0
write them down in sequence - storyboard
-plan sound design for clip
-discuss how to create these sounds
-record the soundtrack and add into the clip
-decide on background music, sound effects and dialogue to add into clip
-present your completed video

Assessment criteria
-relevance of sounds to clip
-clarity of sounds
-effectiveness of media used (IT, live recording)
-coordination between soundtrack and video

-completely blank out sound from video before creating own sound track
